The Jolly Merchant
A light, melodious duet (1P, 4H) in Lydian mode. It teaches contrasts in touch and varied dynamics, and emphasizes use of a dramatic pause at the climax of the piece. The teacher should listen for balance at a distance and make sure the primo part melodies are not overpowered by the more sonorous secondo part in the lower register of the piano. According to the composer, the humor of the piece and feeling of goodwill should come through unashamedly.
