Jo Ellen Hubert

Jo Ellen has been a teacher of music more than half of her life. She brings to her teaching a passion for music and a strong wish to share that passion and the joy music brings with her students. Jo Ellen's students have been consistent winners in local, state and National Competitions. They have been winners in piano others as well as piano pedagogy competitions, concerto events, music festivals, etc. They have excelled in state theory exams. They have won National Composition Competitions. They can be seen singing on various stages in Houston theatres. Many of Jo Ellen's past students now serve as teachers of music, church Ministers of Music, and professors in colleges as well as actors and singers in various theatre programs throughout the United States. She has been blessed with fabulous teachers in her life and wants to share with others what she has learned from them. She believes the joy of music to be of the best parts of living!

Jo Ellen brings a wide range of musical experience to her teaching. Jo Ellen Hubert is an honor graduate of the University of Texas in Austin where she attended on music scholarship. She has studied piano performance and vocal coaching in Hungary at the renowned Kodaly Pedagogical Institute summer program where she was chosen from a body of 300 international musicians as one of two pianists to perform on the Institutes prestigious Final Concert presented to the public and televised. Jo Ellen has served as a clinician and guest speaker for many Music Teachers competitions.

Jo Ellen has presented recitals throughout the state of Texas as well as in Hungary and Japan. She has given Harpsichord recitals and performed with numerous orchestras in the Houston area. She has performed on keyboard and piano with many of the Broadway touring companies when they come to Houston. Jo Ellen has performed as keyboardist and/or conductor for TUTS, Broadway in Houston, HITS, Applause Theatre Company , Kingwood College and numerous other theatre companies. She has performed in all of Houston's major venues including Jones Hall, the Hobby Center, the Wortham Center and Miller Outdoor Theatre. Jo Ellen founded and ran the Music for Tots program for eleven years in the Kingwood Humble area. She founded Applause Theatre Company and served as its Executive Artistic Director for ten years. Jo Ellen has served as musical Director for over 40 different musical productions. Most recently she served as Musical Director for a workshop performance of 110 in the Shade, presented by TUTS and the University of Houston. She worked along with the creators of the Broadway Musical, Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt in this endeavor. Jo Ellen has served as Opera Critic for the Houston Community College TV station. Jo Ellen has written and orchestrated three musicals, While Childhood Slept, Jinx, and Charlotte's Web as well as composed music for Chamber groups, harpsichord, piano, choir, and voice. One of her songs, We Shall Not Forget was featured in the movie Paper Clips, distributed by Miramax throughout the US. Jo Ellen is the 2002 winner of the Woman of Achievement in the Arts presented by the Family Time Foundation in Houston.

Jo Ellen currently serves as a pianist on the TUTS staff as well as serving on the staff of Kingwood College in addition to teaching her private students. Lessons offered at The Music Rack include piano, vocals, keyboard, theory, composition, and piano pedagogy.
